NIRF: INTERREGIONAL DISCIPLES WOMEN / CHRISTIAN WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP

An interregional meeting, such as this one, known as NIRF, is held every 3 to 4 years. The date for this event was October 22-24, 2004 and was held at Camp Christian in Ohio. Among other things, we learned more about the Office of Disciples Women and how it functions along with the Office of Overseas Ministries. We received a moving report from Adonna Bowman of her Woman to Woman Program trip to Columbia to visit with the oppressed women of that mission. The regions in our group include the Capitol Area (DC), eastern Canada, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The national Christian Women's Fellowship, in operation for over fifty years, has offices in Indianapolis, Indiana. For more information about the Disciples' Women's Ministries or International Christian Women's Fellowship (ICWF), click on http://dhm.disciples.org/Women/index.htm. [This organization recently voted to change their name from "Christian Women's Fellowship" to "Disciples Women", but has left it up to individual churches to decide if they wish to take the new name or keep the same name. The purpose of the change in name is to emphasize the freedom of each church's group of women, or different women's groups within a church, to set their own programs and format to reflect the changing needs and interests of members or to continue using the usual fomat and the program materials which they provide each year. The difference in names will not effect the unity of local groups with the national and regional groups combining efforts in benevolent projects to do greater good. Marple Christian Church's group will continue to be called "Christian Women's Fellowship".]

THE JOINT EVENT

For information about The Joint Event, "Dream On, Sisters!"* which will occur June 21 - 25 of 2006, and will be combining women from the United Church of Christ (UCC) with the Disciples of Christ (DOC), click "Mix in '06 Women's Event" website, or, if that doesn't work, go to www.discipleswomen.org and click on "Mix in '06 Women's Event." For nearly a half century the gathering of thousands of Disciples Christian women from all over the United States, Canada, and the rest of the world has been called "the Quadrennial" because it occurs every four years. There was a name change this time because the women of the United Church of Christ will be joining us in an effort to show Christian unity for the purpose of spreading God's love in benevolent acts around the world (including our own country). The theme is dream on: "As sisters we encourage one another to: discover our dreams... be claimed by God's dreams... live out those dreams in the world." (for example, to dream of what good needs to be done, dream of what our Lord would want us to do individually and together, encourage one another, and make sure those dreams come true)
